Nineteen coaches recently attended the first Oregon Chapter of US Lacrosse Coaches Certification Clinic at Lincoln High School in Portland. Despite less-than-ideal weather, everyone survived the rain and had a great learning experience. The attendees were: Mindy Surber, Kevin Callaway, Clayton Stearns, Jeff Krenek, Ralph Bauer, Casey Zeger, Joel Manley, Bill Supplitt, Scott Burns, Charles Dunham, Roger Merino, Shane Goodell, Greg Palmer, Daniel Conner, John Gale, Charles Ducharme, Greg Messick, Frank Lambert, and Mathew Steussy.
Hampton Roads Chapter Donates to Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund
Fueled by the success of its fund raising exhibition game in October between Virginia and Navy, the Hampton Roads Chapter was able to make a donation of $65,000 in December to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, a charity that is dedicated to helping injured marines, sailors and their families. Among those, pictured at right, making the check presentation were Mr. and Mrs. Mark Kelly, representing the Hampton Roads Chapter, and Ms. Maryellen Baldwin of the Hampton Roads Council of the Navy League. Receiving the check for the Semper Fi Fund were Mrs. Helen Toolan and Sgt. Major Lonnie Sanders, USMC (Ret).
Oregon Chapter Adds New Hall of Fame Inductees The Oregon Chapter held its 2007 Hall of Fame induction event in Beaverton, Oregon on November 3rd. Eight new members were inducted and four previous inductees were honored in the first ever formal reception for the Oregon Chapter Hall of Fame. The prior inductees included Fred Zensen, Kris VanHatcher, Mark Flood and Jim Hammon. The 2007 inductees were Holly Allen Ziegler, Hilary Gilmore and Andrea Shatz, and five men: Sam Sadtler, Bill Lake, Thomas Foster, Curt Sheinin, and Brian Platz. Presenting the awards were the Oregon Chapter President Terry Vance, and Portland Lumberjax star Ryan Powell. In addition to families and friends, attendees included many current high school players who came to support their coaches. The recipients of the awards represented virtually all contributions to the game of lacrosse, including all star playing careers in high school and college, officiating, umpiring, coaching and program development. This event was both a symbolic and literal indication that lacrosse has become an integral part of the Pacific Northwest sports scene. Pictured, left to right, are: Tom Foster, Jr., Holly Allen Ziegler, Brian Platz, Samuel Sadtler, Andrea Lynn Shatz, Bill Lake, and Curt Sheinin. Not pictured: Hilary W. Gilmore
Longtime PLA Supporter John Burch Passes Away The Philadelphia Lacrosse Association is sad to note the sudden passing of John "Eagle" Burch, a longstanding member of the Philadelphia lacrosse community and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. In his playing days, Mr. Burch was an all-American lacrosse player at the University of Virginia and played in the North-South Game in 1950. He supported the game throughout his life and served as a referee until he was 75 years old. In 2006, Mr. Burch was inducted into the Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame for his abilities in lacrosse and boxing. Mr. Burch, a Baltimore native, became an early pioneer for Pennsylvania lacrosse. The Eagle's Eye Lacrosse Club, a dominant USCLA men's club team in the 1980s and 1990s, was named after Mr. Burch, as is one of the playing fields at The Haverford School. The Eagle will be deeply missed. - submitted by Scott Growney
Two Presidents Better Than One in South Jersey Four years ago, Bob Sheridan, a former chapter president, moved from North Jersey to South Jersey and thought he had left lacrosse behind. But John Kalinowski, president of the South Jersey Chapter of US Lacrosse, had other ideas. Kalinowski called Sheridan and asked for help in promoting the game in the area. And now, Sheridan is serving as president-emeritus of the South Jersey chapter. "I was ready to turn in my lacrosse stick for a fishing pole, but now I am back with it and I could not be happier," Sheridan recently told The Coast Star newspaper. "I am re-energized and everyone is excited about our programs." Working in conjunction with Shamrock Lacrosse, the South Jersey chapter has been providing nets and balls for area schools or towns starting new programs, and coordinating clinics for new coaches. About 8,000 of US Lacrosse's 20,000 New Jersey members hail from South Jersey. Central Pennsylvania Player Sets National Record Senior Tim Stratton of Manheim Township High School established a new boys' national scoring record recently, capping his career with 589 total points. Stratton broke the record of 577 points, set in 2006 by Massachusetts' Max Quinzani. Stratton, who will play at Towson University next season, helped lead his team to a 26-1 record and the Central Pennsylvania Championship in 2007. To read more about Stratton, please click here.
South Central Texas Chapter's Garrigan Receives Award Coach Andy Garrigan from Austin High was recently selected as the 2007 Coach of the Year for the state of Texas by the THSLL. Andy has taken his team to the Texas State Championship in each of the past two years and was undefeated in Central District play this season. Early in his coaching career Andy was instrumental in establishing the lacrosse programs at Highland Park and St. Mark's in Dallas. Andy is the US Lacrosse representative for Central Texas and serves as president of US Lacrosse's South Central Texas Chapter. Congratulations to Coach Garrigan for this recognition by his peers and for his continuing contributions to the growth of lacrosse in Texas.
