Stanford, UCSB Crash IA Men's Semifinals
Lower seeded WCLL teams join BYU and Colorado State in semis
St. Louis — Twelth-seeded Stanford and ninth-seeded Cal-Santa Barbara
pulled consecutive upsets on the first two days of the US Lacrosse
Men's Intercollegiate Associates national championship tournament
to advance to the semifinals. Second-seeded Brigham Young, the defending
national champion, and third-seeded Colorado State are also in the
semifinals which will be played Friday, May 11 at the Anheuser-Busch
Sports Centre in St. Louis.
Stanford beat fifth-seeded Simon Fraser 20-11 in the opening round
and then defeated conference rival and fourth-seeded Sonoma State
7-4 in the quarterfinals. UCSB, also from the Western Collegiate
Lacrosse League, eased past eighth-seeded Auburn 13-6 in the first
round and then freshman Tom Smith scored the game-winning goal with
2:35 remaining as the Gauchos knocked off top-seeded Michigan 7-6.
Stanford and UCSB will meet in the first semifinal game at 12:30
p.m. on Friday. UCSB nipped the Cardinal 12-11 in the regular season.
The other semifinal will also feature a conference showdown as
well as a rematch of last year's national championship game. BYU,
which beat Colorado State in last year's title game, opened its
championship defense by beating Tennessee 14-11. The Cougars then
blew open a tight game in the fourth quarter to beat California
17-11. Colorado State, the 1999 national champion, destroyed Rhode
Island 19-1 in the opening round and then had little trouble with
state rival Colorado in the quarterfinals, winning 15-7. BYU has
edged Colorado State twice already this season, including an overtime
win the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Lacrosse Lacrosse championship
game. The teams will square off at 4 p.m. on Friday
The inaugural US Lacrosse Women's Intercollegiate Associates national
championship tournament begins on Saturday, May 12. The eight-team
field includes Army, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, Georgia, Miami (Ohio),
Michigan State, Navy, Northwestern and Texas A&M. The women's
championship game will be played at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 13.
Intercollegiate associates are non-varsity teams at colleges and
universities all over the country. There are currently more than
125 men's and 100 women's intercollegiate associates programs affiliated
with US Lacrosse, the national governing body for the sport.
