US Lacrosse Announces 2003 U.S. Men’s Under-19 Lacrosse Team Players and Officials

BALTIMORE — US Lacrosse today announces the names of the 23 players who will represent the U.S. in the 2003 International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) Under-19 World Championship. A 24-person player selection committee named the 2003 U.S. Men’s Under-19 Team, listed below, after a four-day tryout at UMBC featuring 120 of the best players in the nation.

Also following the tryout, a four-person selection committee named the U.S.’s three officials that will participate in the tournament: Mike Infantino (Burlington, Conn.), Steve Miller (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Matt Palumb (Sunderland, Mass.).

"We’re very happy with the team we’ve picked to represent the United States," said Bob Shriver, head coach of the 2003 U.S. Men’s U-19 Team. "The best overall unit may be the midfield, where we have 10 very good athletes. We also have 10 players who have another year of high school left, which is amazing. We’ll have a good mix of guys who will be heading into college and those that will have just finished their first year of college.

"The weekend went very smoothly. Everyone from the selection committee to the coaching staff to the support staff worked very hard. The process was fair and equitable—the players were selected based on their weekend tryout."

The 2003 U.S. Men’s U-19 Team includes players from Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington, D.C. The player selection committee named five attackmen, 10 midfielders, six defensemen and two goalies to the team. Thirteen of the players have graduated high school and will play Division I college lacrosse next spring, while 10 are rising seniors.

US Lacrosse is hosting the joint ILF and International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations (IFWLA) Under-19 World Championships June 26-July 6, 2003, at Towson (Md.) University. Tryouts for the 2003 U.S. Women’s Under-19 Team will be held Aug. 12-14, 2002, at the United Sports Training Center in Downingtown, Pa.

US Lacrosse, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization, is the national governing body of men's and women's lacrosse. For more information on the US Lacrosse national teams programs, visit www.lacrosse.org/national_teams.html.
