US Lacrosse College Notebook March 12, 2004
New Homes Several players around the country haven't taken long to grab attention at their new schools, especially at the University of Maryland where the men's team is ranked second in the most recent USILA Division I poll.
Xander Ritz, who scored 40 points as a freshman at Delaware, has scored eight points in his first two games at Maryland, including seven points in the Terps 14-5 victory over Georgetown on Feb. 28 to earn Atlantic Coast Conference co-player of the week honors. Tim McGinnis, a three-time All-American at Gettysburg, is now in graduate school at Maryland and has a 57.5 save percentage for the Terps. Maryland hosts No. 18 Towson on Saturday.
Ohio native Kyle Olson returned home to Ohio State and ranks third on the Buckeyes in scoring with six points through three games. Olson, who started his career at Syracuse, had three goals in the Buckeyes 8-7 overtime loss to UMBC on March 7. The Buckeyes host Drexel on Saturday.
Former Duke players Matt Monfett and Matt Rewkowksi have both found homes in Baltimore. Monfett has scored three goals in his first two games for Loyola and plays his old team this Saturday when the Greyhounds host Duke. Rewkowski is tied for second for top-ranked Johns Hopkins with six goals. Hopkins travels to Hofstra this weekend.
Around the Country Timchal Picks Up No. 300 University of Maryland women's coach Cindy Timchal became the first women's college lacrosse coach to reach 300 career victories when the Terps beat Quinnipiac 25-3 yesterday. Timchal has led Maryland to eight national championships, including seven straight from 1995 to 2001, and has lost just 68 games in her coaching career. The Terps play at Brown tonight. Brown is coached by Theresa Ingram, one of eight former Maryland players coached by Timchal that currently serve as a Division I head coach.
New IA Polls Out The lastest US Lacrosse Intercollegiate Associates polls are out and they continue to be topped by defending champion Colorado State on the men's side and Navy on the women's side. Colorado State is 6-0 entering weekend games in Oregon against No. 10 Oregon and No. 4 Sonoma State. Navy is off to a 7-0 start.
Battle of Unbeatens There is just one match-up of unbeaten Division I men's teams this weekend—Brown (2-0) at Fairfield (3-0) on Saturday. Brown beat Sacred Heart in its opener and then nipped Vermont 9-8 last weekend. After struggling to beat Providence in double-overtime in its opener, the Stags have added two more wins, including an impressive 10-6 triumph over Penn State on March 6.
The BIG East The Big East Conference features three unbeaten teams in women's lacrosse and that doesn't include Syracuse, which owns a win over Virginia. Notre Dame is 4-0, including a big 11-9 victory over then second-ranked Duke on March 10. The Irish play undefeated James Madison on Sunday. Boston College is 3-0 after beating city rival Harvard 9-7 on Wednesday. The Eagles host LaSalle and Penn this weekend. Georgetown is 2-0 and plays at Syracuse this weekend. The Hoyas have won all 19 Big East games they've played since the lacrosse league started in 2001.
Quack Attack The Stevens Tech men's and women's teams are both off to undefeated starts. The Duck men are 2-0 after a surprising 13-11 victory over Franklin & Marshall last weekend that moved them to No. 16 in the USILA Division III poll. The Ducks play No. 11 Lynchburg on Saturday. The women's team is 4-0 and plays at Villa Julie on Sunday. The Ducks have allowed just 15 goals combined in their four wins.
The Trifecta? North Carolina's men's team aims to complete a difficult three-game road trip with a sweep when it plays at Notre Dame on Sunday. The Tar Heels beat Denver 11-6 on March 9 and then rallied to beat Air Force 10-9 yesterday. The wins improved Carolina to 3-1 for the season. Notre Dame suffered its first loss yestrday, falling 19-13 to Syracuse.
Stick Checks A rematch of last year's NCAA Division I women's final takes place on Sunday with Virginia (3-1) traveling to Princeton (2-0)...Notre Dame de Namur, a first-year men's Division II team from California, went 3-1 in four games last week against Division II teams in North Carolina, including a 13-10 win over St. Andrews...Hartwick's men's team is averaging 24 goals per game in its 3-0 start which was highlighted by a 21-11 victory over McDaniel. The Hawks are ranked 18th in Division III and host 19th ranked Springfield on Saturday.
