Dowd Leads U.S. Past Australia

Team USA celebrated Independence Day with a dominating 21-7 win over Australia. Craig Dowd led all scorers with four goals while defenders Peter Fallon, John Lade and Bray Malphrus, anchored a suffocating defensive performance, including a shut-out in the third quarter.

Dowd opened scoring on with an unassisted goal at 15:34, sparking a four-goal run. The Australians answered with two goals from Joshua Naughton and Blair Coggan to close the first quarter, and Gene Kehoe closed the gap to 4-3 one minute into the second period.

A one-point deficit was as close as the Australians would come to a lead. Thanks to solid defensive positioning and clean, quick slides from the U.S. defense, Australia went scoreless for 27:16, a period extending from the end of the second quarter through the beginning of the fourth. Starting American goalie Adam Ghitelman made five saves, and backup Tyler Fiorito contributed five stops. One of Ghitelman's saves came in the second half when he briefly spelled Fiorito during a 30 second pushing penalty.

Meanwhile, the American attack put on a traditional Fourth of July fireworks display. The offense came alive in the third quarter, scoring eight goals (including two man-up scores from Dowd). Australian goalie Steven Stojkos made eight saves in the high-octane third quarter, and 16 overall, but it wasn't enough to hold off the powerful American attack. Australian back-up keeper Samuel Kilford contributed four saves in the fourth quarter. Twelve U.S. players contributed to the score, with six players scoring multiple goals. No Australian player scored more than one goal.

The U.S. dominance began at the X, where face-off specialist Matt Dolente won 17 of 24 attempts. Nick Elsmo (1g) also won three of six faceoffs.
