The United States rallied from a five-goal deficit with less than seven minutes to play to stun Canada 16-15 in overtime in the International Lacrosse Federation U-19 World Championship. The U.S. improved to 4-0 in the tournament and kept alive its all-time unbeaten record, moving to 33-0 since the event was first played in 1988.
James Green scored the winning goal with 47 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to cap the dramatic U.S. rally.
Canada poured in nine goals in the thrid quarter to take a 14-7 lead entering the final quarter of play. The U.S. sliced the lead to four early in the quarter, but Kiel Matisz gave Canada a 15-10 lead with 9:52 remaining in regulation. The U.S. ripped off five straight goals, tying the game with 26 seconds remaining on Craig Dowd's fifth goal of the fourth quarter.
U.S. goalie Adam Ghitelman went the distance in goal and made 24 saves, including five in the two overtime periods. Dowd's five goals led the U.S. while Green and Jack McBride each added three.
Jayson Card led Canada with three goals while goalie Remington Steele made 22 saves in a losing effort.
The victory clinched a spot in the semifinals (July 10) for the U.S. The Americans wrap up pool play on Monday with a game against England at 12:45 p.m. (Pacific time).
