U.S. Men’s U-19 Lacrosse Team Defeats England 24-4
(July 7, 2008) - Attacker Dean Gibbons (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City HS/Harvard) led all scorers with 5 goals and 3 assists, and Matt MacKrides (Newtown Square, Pa/Malvern Prep/Penn State) added five goals as the United States raced to a fifth consecutive victory at the ILF World Championship with the 24-4 win over England on Monday.
The U.S. U-19 team completes pool play with a 5-0 mark and improved to 34-0 all-time in international competition.
The American defense shut out the English, 11-0 in the first half, and held them scoreless for 36:10, until Zac Guy broke through with an unassisted goal in the third quarter.
U.S. face off specialist Matt Dolente (Phoenixville, Pa/Malvern Prep/Johns Hopkins) had an excellent day, winning 15 of 18 attempts, while Ryan Young (Manhasset, N.Y./ Manhasset HS/Maryland) contributed two goals and three assists.
Starting goalie Tyler Fiorito (Phoenix, Md/McDonogh HS/Princeton) made two saves in the first half, and Adam Ghitelman (Syosset, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor HS/Virginia) contributed three saves in the second half.
English goalie Daniel Grime made 26 saves in a losing effort. In addition to Guy, England got goals from Matt Lord, Sam Russell and Edward Dolan.
With a 5-0 record, the U.S. has secured the No. 1 seed in the Blue Division and a spot in Thursday’s semifinal round. The Americans will face the winner of a play-in game between the Blue Division’s No. 4 Seed and the Red Division’s No. 1 seed (Germany) on July 10 at 4 p.m. PST.
