2005 IFWLA World Cup Game Recaps

ENGLAND 11, CANADA 6

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Five different players scored in the game's first 15 minutes as England raced to a 5-0 lead and cruised to an 11-6 win over Canada in the final Pool A game of the 2005 IFWLA World Cup at Navy's Glenn Warner Field. With the win, England (2-2) earns the Pool's no. 3 seed and a tournament first-round matchup with Germany (B3) tomorrow. Canada finishes Pool A at 1-3 as the group's no. 4 seed and will square off with Scotland (B2).

Katy Bennett, who led the way with two goals and two assists and player of the match honors, set the tone just 71 seconds into the match with an unassisted goal. Alisa Stott (3g), Rachel Kirchheimer, Sarah Butt and Felicity Hermsen each beat Canadian goalie Jennifer Hassidy before the 15-minute mark in what proved to be the decisive spurt. Ahead 6-2 at the break, England eventually surged ahead 10-3 behind back-to-back goals from Emily Garvey and another two-goal run by Stott and Hermsen.

Brooke McKenzie and Crysti Foote scored two goals apiece to lead Canada, which saw defenders Audrey Kelly and Deborah Mendel leave the game with injuries.. The Canadians did rally late, scoring three of the game's last four goals, but they never got within five.

The tournament portion of the 10-team World Cup gets underway Tuesday with five games as the venue shifts to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.


GERMANY 9, CZECH REPUBLIC 6

ANNAPOLIS, Md.  Annette Jungk scored back-to-back goals during a decisive 3-0 to close the first half as Germany took a 6-3 lead and held on for a 9-6 win over the Czech Republic in Pool B play at the 2005 IFWLA World Cup at Navy's Glenn Warner Field. Germany concludes round-robin play 2-2 and earned Pool B's no. 3 seed and a date with the winner of tonight's Canada-England game tomorrow. The Czech Republic fell to 1-3 and will play Pool A no. 2 United States tomorrow.

Germany goalie Sabine Paul made six of her 10 saves in the second half to keep the Czech Republic, which commanded a 27-17 advantage in shots, at bay. In addition to Jungk's two markers to provide her team's three-goal halftime cushion, Germany got offense from Nora Schroeder (three goals, one assist) and Lisa Schulte, who earned the player of the match award with two goals and two helpers. Schroeder and Schulte scored to help Germany assume a 3-1 lead late in the half, but the Czech Republic countered with goals from Veronika Brychcinova and Tereza Koubova, who led her team with two goals, to crawl even at 3 and set up Germany's run.

The Czech Republic closed to within 6-5 after Koubova's second goal at 13:38, but the Germans scored consecutively to regain the three-goal lead and eventually hold on for the win.



SCOTLAND 23, NEW ZEALAND 0

ANNAPOLIS, Md.  Amanda McKie scored five goals and added an assist as Scotland blanked New Zealand 23-0 in a Pool B game at the 2005 IFWLA World Cup. Valerie Houston added four goals and two assists for Scotland and Jenny Demetriadi made two saves to record the shutout.

Scotland finished pool play with a 3-1 record to earn the No. 2 seed from Pool B. It will play the Canada (No. 4 seed from Pool A) on June 28 at 5:30 p.m. New Zealand finished pool play with an 0-4 record and is the No. 5 seed from Pool B. It will play Australia, the top seed from Pool A, on June 28 at 12:30 p.m.


AUSTRALIA 18, WALES 3

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —
Stacey Morlang scored four goals to lead Australia past Wales 18-3, clinching the top seed out of Pool A in the 2005 International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations' World Cup. Australia and the United States each finished with 3-0-1 records, but Australia earned hte top seed based on the IFWLA's goal differential formula.

Australia scored the first seven goals of the game before Wales made a brief charge on back-to-back goals by Laura Warren and Kate Taylor. Both goals came with Australia playing a player down after Courtney Hobbs received her second yellow cards. Morlang's third goal, a short-handed tally, ended the Wales run. Morlang was named the player of the match.

Kate McHarg added three goals for Australia and Jen Adams had two goals and two assists. Australia goalie Suzanne McSolvin made five saves while allowing just three goals.

As the No. 1 seed in Pool A, Australia will play New Zealand (the No. 5 seed in Pool B) in the crossover game on June 28 at 12:30 p.m. Wales is the No. 5 seed in Pool A and will play Japan, the top seed from Pool B, on June 28 at 8 p.m.
