Salesianum (Del.) Moving Up Mid-Atlantic in USA Lacrosse Regional Top 10 Update

Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played April 21.

Half Hollow Hills (N.Y.) and Garden City (N.Y.) join the Northeast Region thanks to strong wins last week. No. 1 Brunswick (Conn.), St. John’s Prep (Mass.), Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) and Half Hollows are all still unbeaten. Bayport’s win over East Islip (N.Y.) bolstered their rankings significantly.  

The top showdown in the Mid-Atlantic Region went to Haverford School (Pa.) which took a 10-8 comeback win over Malvern Prep (Pa.) in a matchup with league, region and national implications. Boys’ Latin (Md.) and Calvert Hall (Md.) picked up wins in their MIAA matchups, but McDonogh (Md.) and Gilman (Md.) suffered tough losses to drop in the rankings. Meanwhile, Salesianum (Del.) put together an eye-opening win over Pennsylvania powerhouse Radnor (Pa.), winning by a margin wider than even national No. 1 Brunswick had.

The South Region returns with the same top eight teams for the second straight week. The top 10 is full of teams with gaudy win-loss records. No team has more than two losses, and Charlotte Catholic (N.C.) and North Paulding (Ga.) are still working on unbeaten records. Playoff runs continue this week and that means more competitive matchups.

The Midwest Region saw minor shuffling up top plus one new team moving into the rankings. The newcomer is Trinity Louisville (Ky.), which brings an 11-1 mark to the table, including 10 straight wins. Upper Arlington (Ohio) leapfrogged Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.) after impressing in challenging in-state wins. The Midwest is the only region without an unbeaten team in the top 10.

Arapahoe (Colo.) continues its climb in the West Region had only one newcomer to the rankings. They maintained their perfect record with a win over previous No. 4 Cherry Creek (Colo.). That leaves them right outside the top three of St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), Valor Christian (Colo.) and Torrey Pines (Calif.) that have all established themselves as the cream of the crop. Brophy Prep (Ariz.) won for the 18th time this season to slide up a spot.

NORTHEAST

1. Brunswick School (Conn.), 8-0

After an 8-4 win over Taft (Conn.), the Bruins remained undefeated by knocking off Hotchkiss (Conn.), 15-6, on April 20. Eleven different players found the back of the net, led by Owen Iles, who netted a hat trick. Casey Quinson and Max Warden scored two goals apiece for Brunswick. Previous: 1

2. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 7-2

Quinn Langton had three goals and three assists, Luke Breslin had two goals and one assist, Gary Merrill had one goal and one assist and Sean Forde made 13 saves in a 9-5 win at Darien (Conn.) that was preceded by midweek wins over Staples (Conn.) and Iona Prep (N.Y.). Previous: 2

3. St. John’s Prep (Mass.), 5-0

Jake Vana had three goals and three assists, Brendan Powers and Drew Bossi had two goals and one assist apiece and Jack Doherty (16/19) and Will Crawford (7/8) dominated the faceoff X in a 15-10 win over Andover (Mass.). The Eagles also defeated Bishop Guertin (N.H.), 10-7, last week. Previous: 4

4. Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.), 10-0

In a battle of undefeated Suffolk County sides, Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) knocked off East Islip (N.Y.), 11-8, behind Connor Curran’s three goals and two assists. Danny Aiello had one goal and three assists, Ben Morris had two goals and one assist and Traigh Tomassone had one goal and two assists to lead the Phantoms. Previous: 9

5. Belmont Hill (Mass.), 8-1

Ben DiBattista had four goals and four assists, Will Stewart had four goals, Preston Evans had two goals and one assist and Topher Batchelder added a pair of goals for Belmont Hill (N.Y.) in a 17-9 win over Groton School (Mass.). Previous: 3

6. Chaminade (N.Y.), 5-3

James Gillis had three goals and one assist, Connor Kuttin had one goal and two assists and 11 other players scored a goal to lead the Flyers to a 15-2 win over Fordham Prep (N.Y.) following a 19-8 victory over Kellenberg (N.Y.). Previous: 7

7. Half Hollow Hills (N.Y.), 10-0

Anthony Raio (North Carolina) had six goals and three assists, Zach Marco (Bryant) had four goals and five assists, Ryan Chung had three goals and one assist and won 19 of 25 faceoffs and Joe Filardi (Syracuse) added one goal and three assists in a 17-4 win over Riverhead (N.Y.). Previous: NR

8. Garden City (N.Y.), 8-2

Andrew Ottomanelli scored a pair of early goals, Luke Cascadden scored 13 seconds into the fourth quarter after a faceoff win, Carson Kraus stuck for a pair of goals and Matt Kephart led a suffocating defense as Garden City (N.Y.) defeated Manhasset (N.Y.), 7-2, in the 140th edition of the Woodstick Classic April 20. Previous: NR

9. Fairfield Prep (Conn.), 7-1

Timothy Shannehan had four goals and one assist, Luke Shannehan had two goals and one assist and Theo Randolph, Emmet Crotty and Nate Estrella each had one goal and one assist apiece in an 11-8 win over Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) following a 15-4 victory over Daniel Hand-Madison (Conn.). Previous: 10

10. East Islip (N.Y.), 9-1

Matt McIntee had two goals and four assists, Ethan Benardos had two goals and three assists, Sean Hannigan had three goals and one assist and Jack Kalinowski had one goal and two assists in a bounce-back 14-7 win over West Islip (N.Y.). Previous: 8

MID-ATLANTIC

1. Lawrenceville (N.J.), 11-1

Lawrenceville downed Perkiomen School (Pa.) and Salisbury (Conn.) last week. In each game, the Big Red held their opponent to seven goals. It’s their third straight game holding teams to seven. They beat Perkiomen 17-7 and then stopped Salisbury, 15-7. They play at Hun School (N.J.) on April 23 and then face a top-10 matchup at Salesianum (Del.) on April 26. Previous: 1

2. Haverford (Pa.), 12-0

In a huge Inter-Ac Conference matchup, the Fords rallied from a 5-2 deficit for a 10-8 win over Malvern Prep (Pa.). Brody Murphy made 13 stops and Aydan DiRocco had a hat trick and an assist as Haverford remained unbeaten in the conference which will determine its champion solely off the regular-season results with no league tournament. Connor Nolen scored twice and Conor Morsell had a tally plus a pair of assists. Haverford disposed of Germantown Academy (Pa.) 20-0 in its next game. The Fords play at Episcopal Academy (Pa.) on April 23 and host Penn Charter (Pa.) on April 26. Previous: 3

3. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 10-2

The Friars got three goals from Logan Turley and two from John Majka, but could not sustain an early lead in a 10-8 loss to Haverford. Nick Wehmeyer won a key battle at the faceoff X, going 12 for 21. Heath Jones made seven saves. Kyle Worsnup and Jack Lehman each had three ground balls apiece. Malvern rebounded from the loss with a 15-7 win over Penn Charter. Malvern faces Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.), Episcopal (Pa.) and Academy of New Church (Pa.) this week. Previous: 2

4. Boys' Latin (Md.), 10-1

The Lakers had no difficulty in a 15-7 win over Mount St. Joseph (Md.) to start the week. Spencer Ford hit the back of the net four times, Colin Kenney finished with a hat trick and Matthew Higgins, Parker Hoffman and Connor Sydnor all had two goals apiece. They pulled away for a 9-5 win over St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.). Boys’ Latin has surrendered double-figure goals just once this season, in an overtime win over Calvert Hall (Md.). The Lakers have only one game this week, but it’s a big one with McDonogh (Md.) visiting April 23 in a key MIAA showdown. Previous: 4

5. Calvert Hall (Md.), 7-4

The Cardinals played just once last week. Calvert Hall built their modest win streak to three with an 18-9 win at John Carroll (Md.) on April 16. Sisto Averno and Owen Scott scored four goals apiece and Peyton Forte had a hat trick. Scott also had two helpers. Calvert has a challenging week with games at Gilman (Md.) on April 23 and at St. Paul’s (Md.) on April 26. Calvert and Gilman are tied for second in the MIAA at 4-1 in league play. St. Paul’s is 3-2 and could pull even with a win. Previous: 5

6. Salesianum (Del.), 10-0

In their only game of the week, the Sals were as impressive as ever. They dismantled three-time defending Pennsylvania AAA champion Radnor 17-3. Rowyn Nurry scored five goals and Elliot Dotson and Carson Robins each had four goals apiece. The 10 wins matches their total from last year. Salesianum will put its unbeaten mark on the line against Lawrenceville on April 26. Previous: 10

7. Landon (Md.), 12-2

The Bears ran their winning streak to 10 games with a 13-9 win over DeMatha (Md.) and a 16-3 victory at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.). Landon has allowed only one opponent to score more than nine goals. The wins set Landon up for a matchup at Gonzaga (D.C.) on April 24 before they play at St. Alban’s (D.C.). Previous: 9

8. McDonogh (Md.), 8-3

The Eagles suffered a 10-9 overtime loss to Archbishop Spalding (Md.) for their second straight one-goal defeat. McDonogh was down early, but a 6-0 run gave them a 8-5 lead early in the fourth quarter. Spalding had the lead in the final minute before Bogue Hahn scored with 56 seconds left to force overtime. Brendan Millon tallied three goals. McDonogh bounced back with a 16-6 win over Loyola Blakefield (Md.) behind four goals and an assist from Luke Miller and four points apiece from Hahn and Eli Schaller. McDonogh, tied for fourth in the MIAA, plays Boys’ Latin, which holds the top spot in the league. Previous: 6

9. Gilman (Md.), 9-3

The Greyhounds cruised by Severn (Md.) 15-7, but were upended by St. Paul’s (Md.) 17-15 to end the week. Gilman broke out to a 6-0 lead against Severn. Michael Maloney had five points on four goals and an assist, and Harrison Schline also had five points on three goals and two assists. Jay Wilkerson scored five times in the narrow loss to St. Paul’s (Md.). The game was tied eight times in the second half. Zach Parks made nine saves. Gilman will try to break the second-place tie in the MIAA with Calvert Hall when they host the Cardinals. Previous: 7

10. La Salle (Pa.), 10-0

St. Joseph’s Prep (Pa.) scored on La Salle (Pa.). That’s more than Conwell Egan (Pa.) and Lansdale Catholic (Pa.) could say after all three teams lost to the Explorers last week. After a 10-5 win over St. Joe’s, La Salle dominated Conwell Egan 18-0 and then blanked LC 12-0. The Explorers look for two more wins this week against Bonner-Prendergast (Pa.) and Cardinal O’Hara (Pa.). Previous: 8

SOUTH

1. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 19-1

The Scots won a division title by easily defeating American Heritage-Plantation (Fla.) 24-3. Nick Testa led the way with five goals while Kian Robbins provided a hat trick. Previous: 1

2. Lake Mary (Fla.), 19-1

The Rams easily won a division title by defeating Lake Brantley (Fla.) 24-1. Lake Mary blanked Hagerty (Fla.) 22-0 in the divisional semifinal. Lake Mary will play Lake Brantley to begin the regional playoffs after the two teams squared off in the divisional finals. Previous: 2

3. Highland Park (Texas), 15-2

The Highlanders enter one of their toughest tests of the season on an eight-game winning streak. Highland Park defeated Rockwall (Texas) 17-5, then followed that win with a 15-3 victory over Allen (Texas). Highland Park’s regular season concludes this week against Episcopal School of Dallas (Texas). Previous: 3

4. Charlotte Catholic (N.C.), 19-0

The Cougars remained perfect for the season after completing a four-win in six-day stretch. The toughest of the matches came in an 18-13 win over Lake Norman Charter (N.C.). Charlotte Catholic followed that with a 16-4 victory over South Mecklenburg (N.C.), 16-4 decision over Ardrey Kell (N.C.) and a 20-13 win over Mill Creek (Ga.). Charlotte Catholic’s regular season concludes this week against Northwest Guilford (N.C.). Previous: 4

5. Bolles (Fla.), 18-2

The Bulldogs earned a divisional title by defeating Episcopal School of Jacksonville 22-2. Senior Parker Kane had seven goals and an assist in the win. Greer Boree won 14 of 15 draws and picked up 12 ground balls. Previous: 5

6. Westlake (Texas), 14-1

The Chaparrals extended their winning streak to 13 last week. Westlake earned a 17-8 victory against Vandegrift (Texas). Westlake also won a 13-7 contest against Woodlands (Texas). Midfielder Ty Ingram-Eiser had five goals in the win against the Woodlands. Previous: 6

7. Benjamin (Fla.), 16-1

The Buccaneers earned a divisional title by defeating one of its top rivals St. Edward’s (Fla.) 15-5. Jack Kelleher was heavily involved in the offense, scoring five times and assisting three times. He has scored 63 goals and added 27 assists this season. Previous: 7

8. Lake Highland Prep (Fla.), 13-2

The Highlanders won a divisional title by defeating Bishop Moore (Fla.) 15-4. Seniors Campbell Elwell, Jack Fiordalis and Chris Jaskiewicz all had hat tricks in the win. Eric McCook had 12 saves. Previous: 8

9. North Paulding (Ga.), 18-0

After an 8-7 win over Walton (Ga.) over a week ago, the Wolfpack got back to blowing out the competition. North Paulding easily defeated Marietta (Ga.) 20-1, which was followed by a 19-0 victory over Kennesaw Mountain (Ga.). Previous: 9

10. Roswell (Ga.), 16-2

In one of their biggest victories of the year, the Hornets held off Blessed Trinity (Ga.) 12-8.  Attackman Ezra Moore had his 200th career point in the win, while freshman Blake O’Neal had a pair of goals to go with 10 ground balls and a 10-of-12 performance at the X. Previous: 10

MIDWEST

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 10-2

Against the Hill Academy (Ont.) team that handed the Eagles two of their three losses a year ago, Culver had a breakout performance for an 18-11 victory. Luke Macaluso (6 goals, 1 assist) and Mason Szewczyk (5 goals, 2 assists) led a stellar Eagles attack while Spencer Reagan and Tay Rodriguez dominated the X, winning 78 percent of faceoffs. The big games are just beginning, including the MSLA Championship in the first weekend of May. Previous: 1

2. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 9-2

The Golden Bears were in control against a pair of strong in-state opponents, including handing Olentangy Liberty its first loss. In both its games, UA built big leads early, taking halftime leads of 11-4 (against Liberty) and 8-2 (against Archbishop Moeller). Centerville (April 25) and Indiana power Hamilton Southeastern (April 26) highlight a challenging week ahead. Previous: 3

3. Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.), 13-2

The Hawklets capped a 3-0 week in-state with a 13-8 win over Missouri powerhouse MICDS, rallying from an 8-6 deficit by scoring all seven fourth-quarter goals. Luke McNamara had monster games against Pembroke (6 goals, 5 assists) and Lee's Summit North (5 goals, 3 assists), while Jack Bichelmeyer stepped up big-time against MICDS (5 goals, 3 assists). Previous: 2

4. St. Viator (Ill.), 8-2

The Lions ran their win streak to six with a 20-8 victory over a solid in-state foe in Benet Academy. Next up is an April 24 trip to Glenbard West (Ill.), which has won 12 straight, including a big-time victory over New Trier (Ill.). Oh, and a road trip to York (Ill.) April 26 could prove challenging as well. Previous: 4

5. Olentangy Liberty (Ohio), 8-1

The Patriots suffered their first loss, against a longtime Buckeye State power in Upper Arlington, but bounced back for a one-goal win over Mason (Ohio). Next up, Liberty heads to Dublin Coffman (Ohio) before entering the Olentangy section of its schedule as it faces fellow Olentangy, Ohio schools: Berlin, Olentangy and Orange. Previous: 5

6. St. Xavier (Ohio), 9-2

The Bombers picked up commanding wins over a pair of out-of-state opponents, topping Carmel (Ind.), 11-5, and Montgomery Bell Academy (Tenn.), 18-0. Keeper Trent Yelton had a massive week, with 16 saves against the Greyhounds and 13 versus Big Red, while Johnnie Guttman had five goals in both games and Khalif Hocker totaled six goals and six assists. Magnus Violet dominated the X, going 14 of 20 against Carmel and 12 of 13 versus MBA. Previous: 6

7. Brother Rice (Mich.), 7-2

The Warriors have responded to their mid-April loss to St. Xavier (Ohio) with a vengeance, putting forth dominant efforts in three games since. That included beating Hartland (Mich.) by a double-digit margin in a rematch of the 2021 and 2022 state title games with Jacksonville commit Cashton Papadelis completing a hat trick early in the second quarter and landing five goals by halftime and Danny Holt winning over 77 percent of his faceoffs on the week. 8. Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.), 7-1

The Shamrocks pushed their win streak to four, winning comfortably against in-state foes Orchard Lake St. Mary's (23-4) and Romeo (19-3). Junior Jack Smiley played a starring role for DCC, finishing the week with four goals and nine assists. Previous: 8

9. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 5-1

The Celtics swept their Worthington competition, topping Thomas Worthington 19-2 Tuesday and Worthington Kilbourne 15-8 April 20. Junior Davis Pyser (7 goals, 2 assists on the week), Xander Johnson (5 goals) and Kyle White (5 assists) led the way for Dublin Jerome, alongside strong goalie play from senior Cory Lorentzen and freshman Matthew Esguerra. 10. Trinity Louisville (Ky.), 11-1

The Shamrocks have won 10 straight since falling to one of the nation's best teams: Western Reserve Academy (Ohio). Those wins include overtime wins over Montgomery Bell Academy (Tenn.) and St. Xavier (Ky.). Watch for a huge game April 27 as Trinity takes on longstanding Missouri power MICDS. Previous: NR

WEST

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 13-2

The Wildcats come out on top another week after securing dominating victories over Serra (Calif.) and Redwood (Calif.). They wrap up the regular season against Marin Academy (Calif.) and Sacred Heart Cathedral (Calif.) next. Previous: 1

2. Valor Christian (Colo.), 9-2

Valor Christian put on fearless performances against league opponents Legend (Colo.) and Highlands Ranch (Colo.). The victory over Highlands Ranch marked the Eagles’ fourth shutout this season. They aim to add to their eight-game winning streak with Regis Jesuit (Colo.) and Mountain Vista (Colo.) on deck. Previous: 2

3. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 12-3

Torrey Pines collected three more wins last week, including two top 10 victories over No. 10 Foothill (Calif.), 14-6, and No. 7 Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 10-8. The Falcons also defeated San Marcos (Calif.). Next up is La Costa Canyon (Calif.). Previous: 3

4. Arapahoe (Colo.), 11-0

Arapahoe remains undefeated overall and in conference play after upsetting previously-ranked No. 4 Cherry Creek, 11-9, and defeating Denver East (Colo.), 13-7. They face Cherokee Trail (Colo.) and Denver South (Colo.) this week. Previous: 9

5. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 9-2

The Bruins split last week in league play, defeating Colorado Academy (Colo.) 12-9 before falling short two goals, 11-9, to previously-ranked No. 9 Arapahoe (Colo.). They look to bounce back against Kent Denver (Colo.) and Cherokee Trail (Colo.). Previous: 4

6. Brophy Prep (Ariz.), 18-2

The Broncos wrapped up their regular season with two victories over rival Desert Vista (Ariz.) and Boulder Creek (Ariz.). Brophy Prep dominated the Arizona Lacrosse League this season, going undefeated at 10-0. Previous: 7

7. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 11-4

The Gators picked up a 16-4 win over Saint Francis (Calif.) before falling, 10-8, in a back-and-forth battle against No. 3 Torrey Pines (Calif.). League opponents Serra (Calif.) and Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) are on deck to close out the regular season. Previous: 6

8. Marin Catholic (Calif.), 13-5

Marin Catholic closed out regular season play with three victories over San Marin (Calif.), Terra Linda (Calif.) and Vista del Lago (Calif.). They are undefeated at 6-0 in the conference heading into the playoffs. Previous: 8

9. Jesuit Portland (Ore.), 7-1

Jesuit Portland’s game against Bellarmine Prep (Wash.) was canceled last week. They take on Westview (Ore.), O’Dea (Wash.) and Skyline (Wash.). Previous: 5

10. Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.), 12-6

The Knights fell 14-6 to No. 3 Torrey Pines (Calif.) before picking up a league win over El Dorado (Calif.). They wrap up the regular season against Corona del Mar (Calif.) and Bishop’s (Calif.). Previous: 10
